Abstract
Summary: Observations were made on the growth of five African elephants in the Basel Zoological Gardens. Data on circus elephants of the same age were also collected. Growth in height decreases at 14–15 years of age in male African elephants. Growth is linear in females levelling off between 15 and 16 years of age. Tooth loss was as follows:Molar I between 1 and 2 years of age Molar II between 3 and 4 years of age Molar III between 9 and 10 years of age Molar IV between 19 and 25 years of age.It has not been ascertained at what age molars V and VI are lost. Résumé: La croissance de cinq éléphants d'Afrique au Jardin Zoologique de Bâble a été observée. Des données concernant des éléphants de cirque de même âge ont été aussi collectées. La croissance en hauteur diminue chez les éléphants d'Afrique mâles à 1′âge de 14–15 ans. Chez les femelles, la croissance est linéaire et se stabilise à 1′âge de 15–16 ans. La perte des dents est réalisée comme suit: la molaire I entre 1 et 2 ans II entre 3 et 4 ans III entre 9 et 10 ans IV entre 19 et 25 ansL'âge auquel les molaires V et VI tombent n'a pas pu être établi.
